Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, and Jerry Lacy as the spirit of Humphrey Bogart in Play It Again, Sam (1972)
Watched this for the first time last night. Oh my God was it clever and hilarious. I had to pause it several times so I could finish cracking the hell up before moving on. There are so few people that make me laugh as much as Woody Allen, and his physical comedy in this was just off the charts ridiculous. It reminded me of my favorite work from people like Steve Martin, John Candy, Chevy Chase, Chris Farley, etc from the 80s and 90s, which is the comedy I grew up on, and that kind of thing just stays with you your whole life. I’ll always prefer that kind of comedy to what’s popular now. I haven’t seen a lot of Woody’s earlier work but I’ve heard that he started out very slapstick and was inspired by the Marx Brothers, so I am really really thrilled to see more. Also, I love how Woody just took his obsession with Casablanca and turned it into a play and movie! Genius! Now i’m dying to watch Casablanca. I haven’t in years, and I really want to see it on the big screen. I’ve been checking places in Manhattan that show other films to no avail, so if anyone knows of any New York City Casablanca screenings, message me please!
